August 15th Vintages Release

julian During the summer months, I often receive around a dozen emails from disgruntled Torontonians that have been ticketed for consuming alcohol (or from possessing visible alcoholic containers) on the front steps of their homes or thereabouts. The fine usually amounts to $125.00, and leaves most ‘victims’ furious with their local law enforcement officials. Under the Liquor License Act of 1990 (available online), it declares that no person is allowed to consume alcohol in any part of a residence that is accessible to the general public. See Section 31, Subsections 1 and 2 for actual quote.

From the amount of emails and letters wine writers tend to receive, it would appear that a growing number of Ontarians are finding this regulation absurd. Being the pessimist that I am, I can assure my fellow (responsible) imbibers that this law is not going to change any time soon, perhaps never. In the meantime then, excepting licensed public establishments, we must enjoy our wine (among other beverages) in our backyards and in the interiors of our homes. I imagine rooftops are also off limits – plenty of other quips where that came from. And my advice to contradictorily innocent transgressors: pay the fine and be done with it.

Onto the latest Vintages release. The August 15th release is entitled ‘Chile’s brilliant showstoppers; plus charming Chardonnays from Burgundy’s south.’ Concerning whites, my top suggestion would undoubtedly be the ’06 Dry Furmint from The Royal Tokaji Wine Company ($13.95, #653220). An absolutely beautiful wine, with lovely floral notes, I hope to pick up a case for myself this weekend (see below for more information).
For reds, fans of Syrah/Shiraz will be pleased with the choices from this release, as three of my favourite wines happen to derive from this magnificent noble grape. For wine collectors, the ’05 Burrowing Owl Syrah ($48.95, #73072) is the obvious choice, as it is indeed a brilliant specimen. However, for more modest enthusiasts, the ’06 Montes Alpha Syrah ($22.95, #612) is definitely a more realistic purchase, with lovely fruit and great polish. Finally, when it comes to Shiraz, the Aussies are no slouches either (see below for more information).

In the end, early indications from Weather Canada suggest a beautiful sunny weekend for Torontonians, with temperatures reaching about thirty degrees. A perfect occasion to enjoy a cool glass of Sancerre or Albariño outside – who says governments have a hard time generating revenue?

Here are my suggestions from the August 15th Vintages Release:

White Wines:

(1) 2008 Albariño, Bodegas Martin Códax, ‘Burgáns’, Rías Biaxas DO, Spain: Starbright, pale straw-lime. Lovely limy sea salt at the outset, giving way to beautiful notes of white pepper, beach pebbles, and a hint of slightly spicy lemon. Clean and refreshing, with mild, racy fruit, good acidity, ending with a splendid, almost nervy finish. Superior Albariño, with all of its textbook components in superb order. Nicely priced. Now-2011. 89
$18.95 (#945063)   M.C.O.

(2) 2006 Dry Furmint, The Royal Tokaji Wine Company, Tokaji, Hungary: Starbright, pale straw-lime. Enticing floral scents, comprising buttercups, daisies, and lilies; also lovely notes of Bartlett pears and the subtlest trace of honeysuckle. Complex and clean, with elegant fruit, balanced acidity, ending in a delicate, well-structured finish. Exceptionally crafted, with beautiful structure and overall character. Undoubtedly one of the most underpriced wines to have come my way in a very long time. Now-2012. 89++
$13.95
(#653220)   HHD Imports

(3) 2007 Gewürztraminer, Jackson-Triggs, ‘Proprietor’s Grand Reserve’, Niagara Peninsula, Canada: Starbright, pale straw-lime. Inviting spice-driven aromas of fresh lychee, green pears, and a hint of lemon. Clean, with good fruit, balanced acidity, and a lovely hint of spicy residual sugar on the finish. Very finely executed. A serious example of how well suited the Niagara Peninsula is for crafting first-rate Gewürztraminer. Nicely priced. Sommelier recommended. Now-2012+. 89

(#134130)   Vincor International

(4) 2002 Riesling Spätlese, Weingut Domdechant Werner’sches, Hochheimer Kirchenstück, Rheingau, Germany: Starbright, pale-light golden-yellow. Beautiful scents of honeyed nuts, giving way to light dried apricots, ‘mature’ melon rind, finally revealing a very subtle hint of petrol, dried white flowers, and spice. Complex and clean, with lovely fruit, balanced acidity, and an expressive hint of sweet honey on the finish. Rather sweet for a Spätlese (only 8% alcohol), nonetheless superbly balanced and well structured. Aging beautifully, and going for an excellent price. Now-2014+.90

(5) 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, Marnier-Lapostolle, ‘Château de Sancerre’, Sancerre AOC, Loire, France: Starbright, pale lime, with a touch of straw. Enticing creamy lime at the outset, giving way to fresh pebbles, light lemon, white grapefruit and flowers, plus a lovely hint of smoke. Complex and clean, with delightful nervy fruit, balanced acidity, and a well structured, stylish finish. Impressively put together. One of the finer vintages I have yet to taste from this ancient vineyard, now under the ownership of the Marnier family. Acceptably priced. Now-2012. 89

Red Wines:

(1) 2005 Château de l’Engarran, ‘Grés de Montpellier’, Côteaux du Languedoc AOC, Languedoc, France: Brilliant, dark-opaque ruby colour, with a touch of purple. Lovely leathery currants, accompanied by dark blackberries, plums, cloves, and spice. Clean, with tight fruit, firm tannins, balanced acidity, and a well-structured finish. Stylish, yet reserved. Indeed quite splendid, and highly ageworthy. On the website: a blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache, and 20% Carignan (odd that the back label claims there is also Mourvèdre in the blend). Nicely priced. Now-2014+. 89
$18.95

(2) 2005 Château Roquetaillade La Grange, ‘Vielles Vignes’, Graves AOC, Bordeaux, France: Bright, opaque purple-ruby colour. Toasty, with inviting scents of fresh mocha, currants, dark plums, blueberries, vanilla, spice, and a hint of leather. Complex and clean, with good fruit, approachable tannins, balanced acidity, ending with a well structured, mightily satisfying finish. Perhaps a little extracted, nonetheless extremely tasty, finely balanced, and genuinely harmonious. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Great price on this one. Now-2015. 89+
$21.95 (#125666)   Vanrick Corporation Limited

(3) 2006 Pinot Noir, Lucas & Lewellen, Santa Barbara County, California: Brilliant, medium ruby colour. Toasty granola at the outset, with fragrant sweet cherries, rhubarb, nutmeg, vanilla, and spice. Clean, with good fruit, soft tannins, milder acidity, concluding with a lovely, polished finish. Very tasty, finely structured, and marvellously priced (quite a rarity for quality Californian Pinot). Aged for nine months in ‘neutral’ French oak, winemaker Megan McGrath, who joined the winery in 2006, has good reason to be pleased with what I presume to be her first vintage. Now-2011. 89
$19.95
(#127605)   Vanrick Corporation Limited

(4) 2004 Shiraz, Barossa Valley Estate, ‘Ebenezer’, Barossa Valley, Australia: Bright, opaque red currant-garnet colour. Intense notes of mocha and eucalyptus at the outset, switching to beautiful scents of dried (baked) plums, currants, a hint of cedar, and lots of spice. Complex, clean, and very powerful (14.4% alcohol), with well-developed fruit, supple tannins, mild acidity, ending with a very long, flavourful finish. Sumptuous, well-structured, and ageworthy, winemaker Stuart Bourne ought to be pleased with the results of his hard work. Indeed, for enthusiasts of mighty Barossa Shiraz, this is one wine you will want to try! Acceptably priced when considering the quality. Now-2016. 89+
$39.95
(#971705)   Churchill Cellars Ltd.

(5) 2005 Syrah, Burrowing Owl, Okanagan Valley, Canada: Brilliant, opaque purple-ruby colour. Toasty, with intense mocha, slightly peppery currants, plums, wild blueberries, vanilla, and spice. Complex and very clean, with delicious, well-structured fruit, fine tannins, milder acidity, culminating in a beautiful, lengthy finish. Superb Syrah, with exceptional power, personality, and polish. Made with 25% new oak, from a mixture of French, American, and Russian barrels. A big wine, with 14.5% alcohol. Expensive, yet most certainly recommendable for both consumers and top-end restaurants. Believe me, this will probably sell out in just a few days, as Burrowing Owl has quickly established itself as one of Canada’s most prominent cult wineries. Now-2015. 91
$48.95
(#73072)   M.C.O.

(6) 2007 Syrah, Montes Alpha, Apalta Vineyard (Colchagua Valley), Chile: Brilliant, dark ruby colour, with a touch of purple. Slightly toasty and meaty at the outset, with reddish brambleberries, light leather, cassis, vanilla, and spice. Complex and clean, with good fruit, fine tannins, milder acidity, ending with a solid, well-structured finish. Very well crafted, with great structure, balance, and polish. Quite a substantial wine (14.5% alcohol), yet it stays together remarkably well. The ’06 vintage contained 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Viognier, and no doubt the ’07 constitutes a similar (if not the same) blend. Reasonably priced. Now-2014. 89

August 1st Vintages Releases
Private Tastings

julian  As seems only appropriate in any civilized society (even the likes of Toronto, where garbage storage has become our new municipal pastime), each new week ought to be accompanied by new opportunities to taste fine wine; and I am happy to report that the past ten days have been rather rewarding in such regard. In addition to my usual sojourn down at the LCBO tasting lab, I have been delighted in the past while to attend a few private tastings of significant enjoyment.

My first tasting of note took place last Tuesday, July 21st: a lovely little German Riesling retrospective, featuring two beautiful wines from Egon Müller, and held at the new two-storied outlet on Avenue Road (located about ten blocks south of Highway 401). Presented by the always amiable and generous Gulnar, one of several delightful product consultants at this particular outlet, the ’06 Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett was brilliant, despite the limitations of the vintage. As for the ’07 Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese that came next, one could not help but to declare such wine divine (see notes below for more information).

My second tasting of note took place just the other day at Vertical Restaurant (located at First Canadian Place), featuring the wines of Andeluna Cellars. Represented in the Ontario wine market by Stem Wine Group, several of my colleagues and I were truly impressed with the overall quality of these Argentinean wines. For my part, I was most pleased with the 2004 ‘Grand Reserve Pasionado,’ a Malbec-dominated blend of beautiful lustre and quality (see notes below for more information). My gratitude to Stem Wine Group owners Robert Tomé and Tony Macchione for the lovely plate of pasta, cheese, and prosciutto that proceeded the presentation. Nice gentlemen, with a solid portfolio on their hands.

Concerning Vintages, the August 1st release is entitled ‘Hot Summer Grilling: good wines, great times.’ As the LCBO designates these themes around a year in advance, they could not possibly have foreseen the precipitousness of such a title, as this has indeed been one truly rainy summer in our fair city!

As you shall see below, my white wine selections for this release are somewhat more eclectic than usual; yet I think wine enthusiasts shall appreciate the overall quality and individuality of each wine. Concerning reds, the August 1st release includes quite a number of ’05 Bordeaux wines, and I have decided to include three of them in my list of suggestions. I assure everyone that they are quite delicious.:

White Wines:

(1) 2007 Chardonnay, Angels Gate, ‘Mountainview’, Niagara Peninsula VQA, Ontario:Moderate toastiness, with light stony butterscotch, dried pears, mild tropical fruit, and the faintest hint of vanilla and creamed corn (common in barrel-aged Chardonnay).
