LAYER CAKE |
Very deep intense purple colour. Intense, spicy, mocha-chocolate nose with lots of cedary, black cherry notes. Off dry, medium bodied, quite well structured, spicy, ripe baked plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, cedary, mocha-chocolate-tinged finish. Screwcap closure. TONY ASPLER / 87-points - Spicy, vanilla oak tending to overpower blackberry fruit notes; medium to full-bodied, well-extracted dark chocolate and berry flavours with a firm finish. |

TASTING NOTE: Layer Cake takes its name from an observation made by winemaker Jayson Woodbridge's grandfather, who noted that the soils of the vineyard were like a layer cake and that a well-made wine should offer layers of rich flavour. This wine would easily have met granddad's approval: offering structured and smoky dark cherry fruit with an earthy undertone kept in balance by a zesty and vibrant acidity. What more is there to say but dig in. (VINTAGES panel, Sept. 2016) |
