Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |

KAIKEN |
One of 72 items (60% of 136 releases) not presented for evaluation under new LCBO policies. Any item not tasted is assigned an interim ZERO-STAR (-) rating and an interim 0-POINT proxy score until properly assessed. The 2016 last appeared in Vintages (**/**+) on November 24, 2018 at $19.95 and was an Explorer Selection. Here is my previous note: Extremely deep intense purple colour. Spicy, cedary, slightly baked plum-cherry nose with some fairly herbal notes. Dry, medium bodied, spicy, somewhat cedary, slightly peppery, plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, high acid, somewhat reedy finish. This REPEAT has 14.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with the same lot number L17360 on the back label. |

Kaiken is the Argentine venture of renowned Chilean winemaker Aurelio Montes, and the Ultra line is made with the best grapes from his vineyards east of the Andes. Expect a ripe, concentrated wine with bountiful black fruit, seamlessly integrated oak and fine structure. This is a wine that will reward some ageing; consider allowing it another three years or so, or enjoy it tonight with herbed roast beef served rare. |
