PARAJE ALTAMIRA MALBEC 2017 Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley, Mendoza
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer CATENA
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. For over 100 years the Catena family has pioneered the high-altitude viticulture and led the way to Argentina’s Malbec revolution. They began sourcing Malbec from the vineyards of Altamira and this 75-acre plot was planted in 1996 in the Uco Valley at 3,613 feet. It is a winner! Deep purple red colour, the attractive, spicy, ripe, plum-cherry-cassis purée nose has just the right balance of gentle cedar notes. Dry and medium to medium-full bodied, it is quite rich and nicely structured with harmonious, bright, ripe, plum-cherry flavours and a lingering, refined, cedary, bright, cassis-tinged finish. It is aged for 12 months in 100% new 225-litre French oak. Has 13.5% alcohol and 4 g/L residual sugar with lot number L20160 on the back label. As I said - it’s a winner. CSPC 492413

TASTING NOTE: I also tasted the just-bottled 2017 Appellation Paraje Altamira Malbec, and this is the one that stands out in 2017. It has more finesse and subtleness, with harmony, balance and elegance, getting close to the 2016. Bravo! Drink date: 2019-2023.
