LUNLUNTA OLD VINES APPELLATION MALBEC 2018 Mendoza
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer CATENA
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. The return of a real, ready-to-drink, crowd-pleaser. Extremely deep intense purple colour. Intense, complex, spicy, mocha-chocolate nose with lots of ripe plummy, black cherry fruit. Dry medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, rather spicy, gently cedary, mocha-chocolate-tinged, ripe plum-cherry purée flavours with some cassis notes on the lingering, fairly grippy finish. This fine Malbec has 13.5% alcohol and 6 g/L residual sugar with lot number L20290 on the back label. The recommended 2017 (***) with 90-points was released on February 8, 2020 at $22.95. CSPC 11769

TASTING NOTE: I was very pleasantly surprised by the 2018 Appellation Lunlunta Malbec, a red from an underestimated/forgotten zone of Mendoza, where Malbec seems to be very expressive and floral. The grapes were picked reasonably early, and they fermented with 100% full clusters. Only half of the wine matured in oak. I already liked the two previous vintages, but in 2018, they selected cooler plots for this bottling, resulting in a fresher and more ethereal wine, with a captivating personality within the classical profile. Bravo for Lunlunta! 48,000 bottles were filled in April 2019. Drink date: 2019-2024. Score - 93 (Luis Gutiérrez, robertparker.com, Oct. 31, 2019) Price $ 22.95
