PROEMIO RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2016 Unfined and unfiltered, single vineyard, Maipú, Mendoza
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer PROEMIO
Proemio, oh Proemio, from where art thou? Today is special day. It’s Monday, March 1st and I just purchased a bottle of this Mendoza single vineyard 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve at Vintages. It is the first Monday that the LCBO has opened in eleven months! This new “wine of the month” appears on the inside cover of the Vintages Catalogue and an impressive 93-point review is quoted. Fairly deep purple-red colour with a youthful ruby rim, it has a fairly intense, ripe, plummy nose with some vanilla-sandalwood notes. It’s dry, medium bodied, well balanced and nicely structured on the palate with lots of ripe, well balanced, plummy flavours with a lingering, gently grippy, sandalwood-tinged finish. Now here’s the catch. Last month the agent dropped off a bottle for me to preview. This presumably was the one submitted to the LCBO for assessment some time ago. It was different in a better way - at least for my taste. First the lot number on the back label was L180917 (vs. L251119 on the one now at the LCBO). Knowing that the grapes were harvested in the Spring of 2016 and that it spent 12 months in French oak suggests that the lot number of the bottle from the agent (L180917) was likely bottled on September 18, 2017, while the bottle at the LCBO would be November 25, 2019. Bottled almost two years earlier, the agent’s sample was slightly richer and had more complexity and depth scoring 89.5-points vs. a very respectable 88.5 points. NEW in Vintages. CSPC 17451

TASTING NOTE: The aromatics on this cabernet are very pretty with citrus, orange peel, blueberries, violets and lavender, as well as clove undertones. The palate is also finely flavored and textured with a delicious savory streak that really makes you want to drink and enjoy this. Medium to full body and long on the finish. Vibrant. Drink now.
