‘Imperial’ is one of the many whisky distillers whose product you can try only in independent bottlings, such as this Gordon & McPhail. The distillery was founded in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Closed in 1985, it was purchased by Allied Distillers and re-opened in 1989 only to be shut down again in 1998. Tasting note: Nose: More distillery character in that touch of smokiness. Slightly vegetal. Palate: Creamier. Apricot. Seville orange peels. Orange-and-ginger marmalade. Very expressive. Finish: Spicy. Dusty. Like powdered nutmeg or cinnamon. Comment: The flavours hang together better in this version, and I favour it over the port finish … (Michael Jackson, www.whisky-world.com) |
