SPARK BRUT SPARKLING 2012 VQA Niagara Peninsula
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer TAWSE
Bright pale straw colour. Very slightly spicy, honeyed, faintly tart, dried ripe apple nose. Somewhat off dry, medium-light bodied, spicy, faintly honeyed, ripe apple flavours with a crisp, unoaked, rather effervescent finish. This ready-to-drink blend of Chardonnay (59%), Pinot Noir (28%) and Pinot Gris (13%) has 12.5% alcohol and 10 g/L residual sugar. I preferred the half-bottle of 2012 (**/**+) which appeared on November 22, 2014 (cspc 404558) at $14.95. The latter is still widely available. I wish I could say that this was a detour but for me it’s still a tad pricey. CSPC 384966

TASTING NOTE: The second vintage of this blend combines the classic champagne mix of chardonnay and pinot noir with 13-per-cent pinot gris. The froth is lively, bubbling away to reveal notes of apple, brioche pastry and a punch of razor-sharp, zesty citrus. Score - 90 (Beppi Crosariol, The Globe and Mail, Dec. 24, 2014) Price $ 24.95
