Bright medium straw colour. Very gently toasty, complex, ripe lemon-apple nose. Very dry, medium bodied, quite well structured, very slightly spicy, intense, ripe lemon-apple flavours with a lingering, very crisp, gently toasty, very effervescent finish. Will evolve. |

TASTING NOTE: Gosset lays claim to being the oldest house in Champagne, dating back to 1584. Despite recent reports by several authorities that the wines have grown too oxidative in style (a big discussion point in Champagne these days), I find this latest release of the Brut Excellence to be neither overtly fruity, nor markedly mature or oxidative, but rather quite right. There's a fine mix of delicate citrus fruit and blossoms allied to fresh almond paste and white chocolate, and autolysis notes are (the yeasty-toasty character typical of traditional method sparkling wines), in fact, a minor if present feature in the overall profile. This presents itself as properly lean, tight and lively, on the drier side of brut, with very good length. Score - 91 (John Szabo, MS, winealign.com, Dec. 18, 2013) |
