TASTING NOTE: I tasted this virtually with winemaker Ignacio Lopez. It was snowing in Ottawa and warm and sunny in San Juan. The wine is well-suited to both conditions, preferably with an empanada or a piece of beef to hand. This is a totally delicious malbec, and at this price you should think of buying more than one. The flavours are rich and forward, well concentrated with powerfully ripe-sweet flavours at the core, and with impressive structure and complexity. It's one of the high-altitude wines that Argentina is delivering with such success. In these conditions the skins of the grapes are thicker, giving the wine more flavour and colour. But the acidity, fostered by the big diurnal temperature swings, keeps it fresh and clean. This is a beauty that's drinking very well now and that you can hold until the end of the decade. But I like the style it has reached now. Score - 5 stars (out of 5) (Rod Phillips, rodphillipsonwine.com, May 2016) |
