Highly prized among the Portuguese brandies, ‘Antiquissima’ Aguardente Extra, is made from the crisp, neutral grapes also used to produce Vinho Verde. After double distillation, the brandies are put in Portuguese oak tuns (very large cask or vat) and matured for 10 years. The distinctive bottle is molded to fit one’s hand. Tasting note: Copper/amber colour. The expressive aromas recall dried fruits, leather, layers of spice and a hint of toffee. Dry with a superb balance. It is easily an equal to many top flight VSOP Cognacs. (David Churchill, Vintages, Aug. 1999) |
