MASTIHA LIQUEUR Greece |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
SKINOS |
Clear and colourless. Sweet, spicy nose with some odd pickle notes. Better on the palate. Extremely sweet, medium bodied, viscous, faintly cherry-tinged, candied powdered icing sugar flavours with a lingering finish. This is seasoned with the sap of the Mastiha tree, a small evergreen native to the Mediterranean region. It has its fans but for me is an acquired taste. Has 30% alcohol and with lot number L17297 on the back label. This REPEAT last appeared in Vintages (*+) on October 25, 2014 at $28.95. |

TASTING NOTE: The sap of the mastiha tree that grows on the island of Chios in the Aegean Sea, has been used since 600BC as a digestive, breath freshener and for medicinal purposes. Chios is the only place on earth where the mastiha trees produce plentiful and pure resin that can be used in beverages, chewing gum and other applications. Skinos Mastiha is a liqueur-like beverage with a unique burnt marshmallow nose and a distinct, unforgettable, unique flavour like a pine sap flavoured marshmallow. I love it over ice at the end of a meal. Score - 89 (Margaret Swaine, winealign.com, May 24, 2016) |
