SPECK FAMILY RESERVE CHARDONNAY 2016 VQA Short Hills Bench, Niagara Escarpment
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer HENRY OF PELHAM
Forward medium light yellow colour. Intense, bright, lemon-key lime pie nose with some rich cedary notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, quite well structured, very spicy, mouthfilling, complex, ripe lemon meringue flavours with a fairly high acid finish. Tasted twice - one bottle, which had been open of four hours, had developed some slight resiny very faintly oxidative notes. The other was tasted just after being opened was perfect. Best with poultry and white meats - not seafood. Has 13.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar and was fermented in French oak - 40% in new Allier barrels and the balance in 1-year-old oak. Being a very hot year, I suspect that this should be drunk in the near future. CSPC 616466

TASTING NOTE: This is one of the first wines I have had an opportunity to sample what the very warm 2016 summer has to offer from Niagara, and I was not disappointed. Aromas of vanilla and butterscotch layered over peach, apple and roasted pineapple. This opens up on the palate with nice concentration and depth that follows through on what the glass delivers on the nose and brings a nice spice note as well. And, in spite of all this fruit and spice there is still beautiful acidity that keeps this wine light on it's feet and reminds us that in spite of a crazy hot summer we are still in fact in a cool climate growing region.
