Perched on a cliff by the sea in the village of Portsoy, Glenglassaugh, pronounced Glen-glas-soph, was mothballed by owners Highland Distilleries in 1986. Hart Brothers bought up single casks of this Scotch and matured them (in this case 22 Years) in their own cellars. In its heyday, Glenglassaugh was a highly regarded part of the mix for the blended whiskies of Famous Grouse, Cutty Sark and Laing's. Our panel's tasting note: Light amber/copper colour. Nose is lightly briny with vibrant tar, leather, roasted almonds, dried fruit characters. Dry with excellent aroma replays on the palate. Precise, balanced and velvety smooth. Full-bodied with a long, complex finish. (Feb. 2001) |
