Glen Breton is one of the first Single Malt Whiskies to be produced in North America. That is, a whisky made at a single distillery (Glenora) with a single grain source (barley from the UK) and one water source (MacLellan’s Brook). The company claims the whisky is aged 10 years in one-year-old Bourbon barrels. The place to best first appreciate this new North American breed is in the nose, not in the mouth. The aromas tell you much about the quality of the product. Tasting note: This spirited malt crafted from a small distillery in the Highlands of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia — “New Scotland” — earns instant classic status. The pure waters of the distillery’s Maclellan’s Brook result in an exceptionally clean, light malt. Yet lightness in no way means lack of character or complexity. Single malt fanciers will prize the all-around balance of this rich yet smooth and subtle dram. Colour: Amber Gold. Nose: Big bouquet, fresh, warm and heather-floral. Body: Medium. Palette: Zest of heather-honey, assertive yet gentle in taste, slightly dry in texture, medium depth, lots of flavor development. Finish: Rounded, lingering, faintly sweet, merest whisper of peat. (Jonathan D. Auerbach, a travel writer and critic, writes frequently for the Robb Report magazine.) This review appears on Glenora’s comprehensive website www.glenoradistillery.com. Price $ 85.00
