MALBEC 2016 Uco Valley, Mendoza
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer OSQUITA MUERTA
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. An interesting well made Malbec that I have not had the pleasure of tasting before. This is surprising still firm and youthful with a deep intense purple colour. The nose shows lots of complexity with a streak of minerality and hints of cucumber mixing it up with ripe Damson plum, cassis and dark cherry. Very dry, medium-full bodied, well structured, intense, mouthfilling, still slightly tannic, youthful, bright, plum-cherry-blueberry flavours and a long, lingering, cedary, fairly high acid finish. It has 13.55 alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number 20200720 on the back label. The grapes come from two vineyards and are fermented separately in French oak barrels and concrete egg shaped vats. Then 50% of the wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months while the rest remains in concrete vats. CSPC 17138

TASTING NOTE: The eponymous 2016 Mosquita Muerta Malbec is the top of the range (with a white and red blend in the same range) produced with fruit from different parts of Valle de Uco in Mendoza. It was produced in a fresh and transparent style, aided by the cool natural conditions of the year that delivered electric freshness. It has a varietal and clean nose mixing notes of violets and wild berries and herbs with very integrated oak. The palate is medium to fullbodied with juicy fruit and a tasty, almost salty finish.
