VIDAL ICEWINE 2018 VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer INNISKILLIN
Assessed from a bottle provided by the producer. The 2018 vintage was a perfect year for icewine with the harvest starting on December 14 at -10ºC and all the clusters being harvested over the next few days. Unlike the $89.95 “Gold Vidal” which is fermented in new French oak, this “Vidal Pearl” sees no oak aging. Bright medium-light yellow colour, it has an intense, attractive, sweet, gently citrusy, honeyed, Seville orange marmalade nose. Very sweet but balanced, it is medium to medium-full bodied, quite rich and well structured with spicy, honeyed, apricot-Seville-orange-marmalade flavours with a lingering, bright, crème brûlée finish. This 100% Vidal has 9.5% alcohol and 245 g/L residual sugar with a tangy 10.5 g/L total acidity. I prefer this to be served gently chilled in order to taste all the flavours. The Pearl and the Gold (95-points) were tasted blind side-by-side, the latter having more richness and complexity was my personal favourite. CSPC 388306

Tasting Note: The 1989 vintage of this Icewine won the Grand Prix d'Honneur at Vinexpo and put Canada on the global wine map. Delicious creamy peach, candied citrus peel and honey flavours. Delectable with raspberry mousse or an assertive cheese such as Gruyère.
