“This fine white wine from the Douro Valley is the result of a careful blend of Moscatel (50%), Viosinho (33%), Fernao Pires (8%), Gouveio (6%) and Malvasia Fins (3%) varieties. After fermentation the wine was left a short while on its lees in order to develop complexity and richness.” (Quote on back label)
The principal grape the Spanish use in their production of brandy is the Airén grape. Like every region throughout the world that makes brandy, Airén is selected by most Spanish producers because of its tendency to create low acid, neutral wines – a wine that is bland as a table wine, but excellent when distilled. To intensify the flavours and produce a finished product with a higher than usual sugar content, the grapes, from the La Mancha region, are picked at maximum ripeness. The distilled brandy is then stored in Oloroso Sherry casks in a solera system. In theory, this brandy should taste similar each time a batch is drained off the solera ‘pyramid’. Tasting note: Rounded, with walnut/dundee cake notes on the nose. Chewy, clean with good range of flavours and soft, vanilla fruit. ‘Highly Recommended’. (Decanter, Dec. 1997) |
