IRISH POTEEN Irish Whiskey |

This potent, triple distilled, perfectly clear coloured spirit has a 55.5% alcohol! Sweetish caramel pudding nose with some faint hints of hay and green pear. Ditto for the palate. It all seems quite light, smooth and pleasant but is potentially a dangerous drink. Take care and may the shamrocks be with you! |

Quality Irish Poteen (or Poitín – pronounced ‘put-cheen’) is a clear spirit made with either malt or barley and usually triple-distilled. Poteen is essentially embryonic whiskey that has not yet been committed to barrel. It has a pronounced fruity character. Many people, perhaps due to its clear colour and gentle aromatics, use it as a fine substitute for vodka. Tasting note: The 101 proof version nosed, remarkably, of banana and pear [they also produce a 140 and a 180 proof]. In the mouth the 101 proof was a pleasure- banana mostly, with a bit of pear. Quite smooth and fruity. Score – HHHH1/4 (out of 5). (Kevin R. Kosar, www.alcholreviews.com, March 2003) |
