GREEN SPOT IRISH WHISKEY |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
Mitchell & Son |
Fairly deep golden amber colour. Peppery, caramel-tinged, ripe plum and dried apple nose. Fairly well balanced, dry, medium bodied, slightly honeyed, sweetish, caramel flavours with a slightly peppery finish. For whatever reason, this batch (or at least the bottle sampled) idid not seem to be as appealing as the lot released earlier this year (July 10, 2004). |

When we last offered this product in July, it flew off the shelves. Tasting note: Until recently, Green Spot was a closely guarded Irish treasure, exported only through the false-bottom carry-on bags of enterprising tourists ... The whisky's flavour is sweetly malty, with hints of orange peel and honey, lifted by exotic spices, predominantly cardamom. It's delicate enough to match with food, but a classic way to serve it is as an apéritif. [John] Maxwell [of Allen's restaurant in Toronto] describes it as \"the fino sherry of Irish whisky,\" referring to the crisp, light style of Spain's famous fortified wine. In fact, part of the blend is aged in old sherry casks, and the flavour comes through in a whisper. Despite its considerable spiciness, the whisky stays remarkably smooth - \"easy as Irish conversation,\" Maxwell says. (Beppi Crosariol, The Globe and Mail, July 10, 2004) |
