There is only one distillery on the Isle of Mull in the town of Tobermory. Both the village and the distillery were original called ‘Ledaig’ which means ‘safe haven’ in Gaelic. But when the village changed its name to Tobermory, so too did the distillery. The Scotches from here are unique in that they achieve their attractive, gentle ‘peat’ flavour through the water, not from smoking the malt over peat fires. Tobermory, now owned by the mainland Burn Stewart, uses the ‘Ledaig’ name for a line of older Single Malts, such as this one. The saltiness that used to be apparent in this producer’s Scotches is no longer there because their island warehouses were sold off and all of the product now matures in Burn Stewart’s mainland property, Deanston. Scotch expert, Michael Jackson, describes the Tobermory ‘house style’ as “Faint peat, minty, sweet. Restorative.” |
