GOLD VIDAL ICEWINE 2019 VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer INNISKILLIN
I am told that this 2019 vintage was a perfect year for icewine. The harvest starting on December 18 at -10ºC but didn’t finish until Feb 9 - usually the shorter the hang time the better. Bright medium yellow colour, it has an intense, attractive, very sweet, citrusy, Seville orange marmalade nose with fresh, bright, honeyed, caramel-apricot notes. Very sweet but balanced, it is medum to medium-full bodied, rich and quite creamy with spicy, honeyed, apricot-Seville-orange-marmalade flavours with a lingering, bright, mouthfilling, tropical, crème brûlée finish. This 100% Vidal has 9.5% alcohol and 270 g/L residual sugar with a hefty 10.5 g/L total acidity. I prefer this to be served gently chilled in order to taste all the flavours. This 100% Vidal was fermented in new French oak at 15ºC for 16 days after which it receives three months in barrel before bottling. The lot number L2205197H-19 appears on the lower part of the glass bottle. CSPC 19083

TASTING NOTE: The 2019 Gold Vidal Icewine was fermented and aged for about 14 weeks in 90% new French oak. It comes in with 272 grams of residual sugar, 10.5 of total acidity and 10% alcohol. Rich and unctuous, this also has classic aromatics and a certain level of freshness that keeps it from being particularly cloying. This is also completely delicious, with a little of bit of spicy apricots on the mouthwatering finish. The acidity lifts the fruit and allows it to shine through. It's never going to be a nervy wine, but it is not flabby either. If you like stickies, this won't disappoint. It should age very well, acquiring a bit more character along the way. Many will like it the way it is, but it can acquire another dimension in time. Drink date: 2021-2036. Score - 94 (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, Jan. 20, 2022) Price $ 89.95
