Brunello is to Sangiovese what Bordeaux’s Pauillac is to Cabernet Sauvignon. This Tuscan sub-region, centred on the town of Montalcino, is capable of producing deep, rich, long-lived red wines that stand well above typical lighter-styled wines from neighbouring regions which also use Sangiovese. According to winespectator.com, this wine retails stateside for about US$58. Tasting note: Medium deep ruby colour with aromas of prune/plum, anise/licorice, cedar, and kirsch. Dry with chunky fruit surrounded by lively acid and good, but not overly firm, tannins. Medium full-bodied with a very long finish. Cellar 3-5 years. (VINTAGES panel, June 2003) Price $ 47.00
