Among Portuguese brandies, probably the most highly prized is Antiquissima Aguardente Velha Reserva, made from the crisp, neutral grapes used to make Vinho Verde. After double distillation the brandies are put in Portuguese oak tuns (very large cask or vat) and matured for 10 years. Tasting note: Copper/amber colour. The expressive aromas recall dried fruits, leather, layers of spice and a hint of toffee. Dry with a superb balance. It is easily an equal to many top flight VSOP Cognacs.
