Milford Whisky has been produced for over 30 years in New Zealand. The barley is all sourced from the South Island, and the water is runoff from melted snow out of the Lammerlaw mountain range. The water collects in the ‘Great Moss Swamp’ where the distillery also sources its peat. Until three years ago, when new owners took over, the whiskies were released under the ‘Lammerlaw’ name. This is perhaps the perfect dram to sip while watching the New Zealand-filmed Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tasting note: Nose: Dry and malty/oaty (accentuated with water). Light vanilla, creme caramel, some dried apricot. Palate: Herbal tea with some citrus notes and nutmeg. A little too light with water. Finish: Dry, slight wood. Comment: Well-made, light and clean. Good balance. (Dave Broom, www.whiskymag.com, July 2002) |
