Okanagan Fall Wine Festival 2006
(September 29-October 8, 2006)

Autumn in Okanagan wine country is the perfect time to take advantage of the multitude of harvest celebrations centered on the annual Okanagan Fall Wine Festival. Experience an endless variety of vineyard tours, lunches, dinners and special events. For ten days in early October enjoy over 165 events throughout the valley - all focused on wine, food, education and the arts in one of North America's most spectacular settings - the Okanagan Valley.

For more information contact Okanagan Wine Festival Society at 250-861-6654 or email info@TheWineFestivals.com or visit www.thewinefestivals.com

I highly recommend WestJet, the official airline of the Okanagan Wine Festival. Fly WestJet direct non-stop Toronto and Kelowna. Note that there is a current Fall Sale (until October 4) featuring seats as low as $219 one way. Flights depart from Toronto daily at 9:05 am and arriving at 10:44 am, Kelowna time (vs. 8:10 am departure for Air Canada). The Westjet return from Kelowna is at 11:35 am (arriving at 6:38 pm, Toronto time). To book click here.

One of the top destinations is the just-opened Spirit Ridge Vineyard Resort & Spa located in the hills overlooking Osoyoos at the southern end of the Okanagan Valley. There is no better way to unwind than settling into your luxurious Desert Suite or Vineyard Villa. Their "Grape to Glass Escape" features a tantalizing start to your day with Nk'Mip Cellars Breakfeast Club, followed by a tour and tasting. At night, after a game of golf on the deluxe Sonora Dunes Golf Course 9-hole course (to see click here), or touring the adjacent award-winning Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre (to see click here), join Chef Brad Lazerenko for a gourmet food and wine pairing dinner at Passatempo Restaurant celebrate the best of the Okanagan. Call 1-877-313-9463 (click here to go to the website).

Those planning to tour Okanagan wineries may want to get a copy of John Schreiner's Okanagan Wine Tour Guide at $19.95. This soft-cover is fairly up to date and was released earlier this year. Its only major shortcoming is that it doesn't provide any vintage information or notes on the recommended wines to taste. At Jackson-Triggs, for instance, the tasting room is now open (click here to see the announcement) and the wine to taste/buy is Jackson-Triggs Okanagan Estate 2004 Proprietor's Grand Reserve Shiraz at $25.99.

Another guide worth buying is Jim Couper's Discovering the Okanagan. This paperback was published by Whitecap last year at $18.95 and is loaded with useful information. Great maps and updated winery information is also available in the free quarterly British Columbia Wine Trails (see www.winetrails.ca).
